Join us in June as Ron Yee, co-editor of the ERA Bulletin Commuter and Transit News column, presents a summary of the ERA’s May 2014 Japan Rail, Tram and Sightseeing Tour. This extensive three-week expedition, which began and ended with the Tokyo area, covered all but two tram operations in Japan and included time to cover quite a number of commuter rail, subway and metro systems in the cities that were visited.

Tram systems that Ron plans to cover with his digital slideshow include Tokyo, Toyama, Sapporo, the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine route near the Nagano Olympic site, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Kyoto, Wakayama, Fukui, Hakodate, Kochi, Kagoshima, Kumamoto, Matsuyama and Okayama. The commuter railways around many of those cities will also be shown as will be the subway systems of Tokyo, Kyoto and Sapporo. To travel between cities, ERA scheduled many rides on intercity trains, including narrow-gauge routes as well as the famed Shinkansen “bullet” trains.
